What are the key e-signature statistics for 2026?

MarketsandMarkets puts the global digital signature market at USD 17.68 billion in 2026. In a 2026 Forrester study commissioned by Ironclad, 74% of contract decision-makers used eSignature tools. Docusign says 76% of its eSignature transactions in fiscal 2026 were completed in under 24 hours, and 47 states plus DC have a remote electronic notarization law.

This page collects more than 150 e-signature and digital contract statistics in twelve groups: market size, adoption, vendor results, time and cost savings, contract value leakage, fraud and security, law and legal validity, remote online notarization, digital mortgages and eNotes, India's eSign system, government use, and paper and sustainability.

Figures come from statutes and public bodies such as the IRS, FBI, FTC, EPA, Eurostat and UNCITRAL, from company SEC filings, and from market research firms and industry surveys. Studies paid for by e-signature vendors and claims from company websites are labeled as such, and every number links to its source. The data was checked on October 17, 2026.

E-Signature Market Size and Growth Statistics

Research firms size the digital signature market very differently, from USD 4.8 billion to USD 12.22 billion for 2025, because each defines the category in its own way. Compare growth within one publisher's figures rather than across publishers.

What the numbers mean for businesses

Electronic signing has taken most of the waiting out of getting a contract agreed. Docusign's fiscal 2026 annual report says 76% of its eSignature transactions were completed in less than 24 hours and 40% within 15 minutes. On the government side, a May 2025 TIGTA audit found IRS paper forms take 6 times longer to process than electronic ones.

Faster signing has not fixed what happens after. In a 2026 Forrester study commissioned by Ironclad, 74% of contract decision-makers used eSignature tools, but 62% used a contract lifecycle management platform, only 43% were satisfied with it, and 44% still managed contracts with spreadsheets and email. World Commerce & Contracting estimates the average organization loses 8.6% of contract value to poor contracting, and more than 20% at the worst performers. Nearly 60 percent of US procurement leaders in a 2026 Icertis survey had found they were paying suppliers more than their contracts required.

A quick signature is where the work starts, not where it ends. Record each side's obligations, renewal dates and price terms when the agreement is signed, and check invoices and renewals against them.

What the numbers mean for freelancers, workers and consumers

An electronic signature binds you the same way ink does. The federal ESIGN Act, enacted June 30, 2000, stops a contract from being denied legal effect solely because it is electronic, and UNCITRAL lists every US state except New York, plus DC, as enacting the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act. Clicking a signature box on an offer letter, freelance agreement or lease will usually count as signing it, even when it takes a minute.

Fraud has moved online along with the paperwork. Losses reported to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center reached $20.877 billion in 2025, including $3,046,598,558 from business email compromise. In property sales, 59% of title insurance firms reported at least one seller impersonation fraud attempt in 2025, up from 28% in ALTA's 2024 study.

Notarization is moving online too, but unevenly. NASS counts 47 states plus DC with a remote electronic notarization law. California notaries cannot yet notarize by audio-video, and the state's law sets January 1, 2030 as the latest date for that to begin.

What to do before you sign electronically

  • Open and read the whole document, rather than just the fields marked for your signature. Signing takes minutes, so set aside time to read first.
  • Confirm that a signing request really came from the person you expect, using a phone number or address you already have. Identity theft complaints to the FBI's IC3 rose to 31,675 in 2025 from 21,403 in 2024.
  • Find the clause on electronic records and notices. It decides whether an email counts as formal notice to cancel, renew or end the contract.
  • Download the signed copy and the signing record, and keep them with the date you signed.
  • If a document needs a notary, check your state's remote notarization rules and fees. Florida and Virginia cap an online or electronic notarial act at $25.

Check a contract before you e-sign it

An e-signature makes a contract as binding as a signature in ink, and signing online leaves little time to read. An automated review of your contract flags the clauses that carry risk, rates each one and explains it in plain English, so you know what to question or ask to change before you click sign.

  • Consent to electronic signatures and records, and how to withdraw it
  • How notices must be sent and when an email counts as received
  • Auto-renewal terms and how many days' notice you need to cancel
  • Payment terms, late fees and price increase rights
  • Termination rights for each side and any fees for ending early
  • Limitation of liability and indemnification, and whether they apply to both sides
  • Governing law, venue and any mandatory arbitration
  • An entire agreement clause that cancels promises made by email or in person

Frequently asked questions

Are electronic signatures legally binding in the US?

Yes, for most contracts. The federal ESIGN Act, enacted June 30, 2000, bars a signature or contract from being denied legal effect solely because it is electronic. UNCITRAL lists every US state except New York, plus DC and three territories, as enacting the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act.

How big is the e-signature market?

Estimates vary by publisher. MarketsandMarkets puts the global digital signature market at USD 17.68 billion in 2026, while 2025 estimates range from USD 4.8 billion (Future Market Insights) to USD 12.22 billion (Precedence Research).

How many businesses use e-signatures?

In a 2026 Forrester study commissioned by Ironclad, 74% of 500+ contract decision-makers in the US, UK, France and Germany used eSignature tools, the most used contracting tool in the study. In Japan, 80.2% of companies surveyed by JIPDEC in January 2026 used electronic contracts.

How fast are documents signed electronically?

Docusign's annual report for fiscal 2026 says 76% of its eSignature transactions were completed in less than 24 hours and 40% were completed within 15 minutes.

How many people use Docusign?

Docusign reported more than 1.8 million customers and more than a billion users worldwide at January 31, 2026. Its revenue for fiscal 2026 was $3.2 billion, up 8% year over year.

Which states allow remote online notarization?

The National Association of Secretaries of State counts 47 states plus the District of Columbia with a remote electronic notarization law. Virginia was first in 2011. California does not allow it yet, and its law sets January 1, 2030 as the latest start date.

Is fraud a risk with electronic signatures?

Yes, and impersonation is a large part of it. ALTA found 59% of title insurance firms reported at least one seller impersonation fraud attempt in 2025, up from 28% in 2024, and the FBI's IC3 recorded $3,046,598,558 in business email compromise losses in 2025.
