Which states protect freelancers from non-payment?
At the state level, New York (statewide since August 2024) and Illinois (July 2024) have "Freelance Isn't Free"–style laws requiring a written contract, timely payment, and penalties for non-payment; several cities have their own. Everywhere else, your contract's payment terms are your main protection.
Can a client enforce a non-compete against a freelancer?
