What do the latest Upwork statistics show?

Upwork is big but no longer growing much. It enabled $4.0 billion in gross services volume in 2025, up 1% from 2024, while active clients slipped to 763,000 by June 30, 2026. Upwork is one of the best-known names in online freelancing, and its own SEC filings tell a clear story. The money moving through the platform has been roughly flat since 2022, the number of active clients is shrinking, and Upwork keeps a bigger slice of every job than it used to.

This page pulls the hard numbers from Upwork's annual reports and quarterly results: gross services volume, revenue, take rate, active clients and the fee schedule. Below the charts, you'll find what those numbers mean if you sell your work there, hire there, or are deciding whether to move a client off the platform.

How many clients does Upwork have in 2026?

Upwork reported 763,000 active clients as of June 30, 2026. That is down 4% from 796,000 a year earlier, and well below the 851,000 it counted at the end of 2023. Keep in mind that "active client" is Upwork's own metric, so it is not the same as everyone with an account.

The quieter number is more interesting. Gross services volume per active client hit a record $5,230 in Q2 2026, up from $5,036 in Q3 2025. So Upwork has fewer buyers, but the ones who stay are spending more.

For you as a freelancer, that cuts two ways. There are fewer clients to pitch, so each good job draws more competition. But the clients who remain are spending more on average. A proposal that speaks to an ongoing need, such as monthly maintenance or a content retainer, now fits the buyer base better than a one-off quick fix.

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

For Marketplace contracts formed from May 2025, Upwork charges freelancers a fee of 0% to 15% of earnings. The rate is set when the contract starts and stays fixed for that contract. Contracts formed before May 2025 keep the old flat 10% fee, and Enterprise Solutions engagements also carry 10%.

Clients pay too. The standard client marketplace fee is 5% per transaction, or 3% if an eligible client pays by ACH. Business Plus clients pay 10%, or 8% via ACH.

Put the two sides together and you get the take rate: Marketplace revenue divided by Marketplace volume. It was 18.7% in 2025, up from 13.2% in 2021. Not all of that comes from the fees above, but it tells you how much of the money flowing through the platform ends up with Upwork rather than with you.

  • Check the fee shown on every new offer before you accept. Under variable pricing, two contracts can carry different rates.
  • Quote your rate with the fee already baked in. If you need to clear a set amount per hour, work backward from the top of the 0% to 15% range, not the bottom.
  • Think twice before closing a pre-May 2025 contract that still has work in it. It keeps the flat 10% fee, while a new contract gets a fresh rate that could be higher or lower.

Is Upwork growing or declining?

Both, depending on which line you read. Revenue hit a record $787.8 million in 2025, up 2% from $769.3 million in 2024. Gross services volume was $4.0 billion, up just 1%. Active clients fell, and quarterly volume dropped from $1,020.3 million in Q4 2025 to $966.4 million in Q2 2026.

The plain reading: Upwork the company is growing by charging more, while Upwork the marketplace is roughly flat. That matters for anyone who depends on it for income. If the pool of client spending stays flat and more freelancers compete for it, each person has to win a larger share to stay even.

If most of your income comes from one platform, treat that as a business risk, the same way you would treat one client paying most of your bills. Build at least some direct client work alongside it.

Where do Upwork's clients and freelancers come from?

Upwork is a U.S.-driven market. In 2025, 71% of gross services volume came from U.S. clients. About 25% came from U.S. talent, the largest single talent country, followed by India and the Philippines.

Revenue from talent shows a similar picture. Upwork earned $114.0M from U.S. freelancers in 2025, then $57.9M from the Philippines, $53.5M from India and $46.2M from Pakistan, out of $443.3 million in total talent revenue.

If you are a U.S. freelancer, this is useful context when clients push on price. You are competing globally for mostly American buyers. Your edge is usually time zone, communication, U.S. business knowledge and accountability, so make those visible in your profile and proposals instead of trying to win on rate alone.

What should businesses hiring on Upwork know?

If you hire on Upwork, the fee you see on the invoice is only part of the cost. You pay the 5% client fee, or 3% via ACH if you qualify, and the freelancer may price in their own fee of up to 15%. On the Business Plus plan your side rises to 10%.

The bigger risk is usually the paperwork. The default platform terms are written for a general marketplace, not your project. If the work involves your code, customer data or brand assets, add a short services agreement that spells out who owns the deliverables, what confidentiality covers, and what happens if the work is late or wrong.

Keep it fair, too. A one-sided contract with unlimited revisions and payment only on your "final approval" will scare off the strongest freelancers, and with fewer active clients competing for them, good talent has choices. Clear milestones, a defined number of revision rounds and prompt release of funds get you better people and fewer disputes.

What Upwork's numbers say about freelancer earnings

Upwork's filings don't publish an average or median income per freelancer, and you should be wary of any site that claims an exact figure from them. What the data does show is where your earnings leak.

Take a simple example. You land a fixed-price website project. Upwork's fee comes out of your side, the client pays its own fee on top, and if the client also asks for unlimited revisions, a vague "final approval" before release of funds, and full ownership of your templates, the real hourly rate can fall far below what you quoted.

The fee is fixed and visible. The contract terms often aren't. Some clients send their own agreement to sign alongside the Upwork contract, covering ownership, confidentiality, non-solicitation and liability. Those extra terms can cost you more than any platform fee, so read them before you start the work, not after the first dispute.

How ClauseAudit helps

Upwork sets the fee. The client sets almost everything else, often in a separate services agreement or statement of work that sits on top of the platform contract.

Upload that agreement and the automated review flags the clauses that decide what you actually take home, with plain-English notes and suggested wording to send back before you accept the offer.

  • Payment triggers tied to vague "final approval" or client satisfaction
  • Revision limits, scope definitions and what counts as a change order
  • Who owns the work, including your pre-existing tools and templates
  • Kill fees or partial payment if the client cancels mid-project
  • Non-solicitation and non-compete terms that could block future clients
  • Liability caps and indemnity promises that exceed the project fee

Frequently asked questions

How many active clients does Upwork have?

Upwork reported 763,000 active clients as of June 30, 2026, down 4% from 796,000 a year earlier. At the end of 2025 it had 785,000. Active client is a metric Upwork defines itself, so it counts clients with recent spending activity, not every registered account.

What is Upwork's fee for freelancers in 2026?

For Marketplace contracts formed from May 2025, Upwork charges freelancers 0% to 15% of earnings. The exact rate is shown when the contract starts and stays fixed for that contract. Contracts formed before May 2025 keep a flat 10% fee, and Enterprise Solutions work is also charged 10%.

How much do clients pay to hire on Upwork?

The standard client marketplace fee is 5% of each transaction, or 3% for eligible clients paying by ACH. Clients on the Business Plus plan pay 10%, or 8% via ACH. These are on top of what the freelancer charges, so a client's total cost is higher than the posted rate.

What is Upwork's take rate?

Upwork's Marketplace take rate was 18.7% in 2025. It is Marketplace revenue divided by Marketplace gross services volume. The rate has risen every year shown, from 13.2% in 2021, which means Upwork keeps a larger share of each dollar spent on the platform than it did a few years ago.

How much money goes through Upwork each year?

Upwork enabled $4.0 billion in gross services volume in 2025, up 1% from 2024. Volume has been close to that level since 2022, when it reached $4,104.9M. The peak in the period shown was $4,142.3M in 2023, and the 2025 total of $4,028.4M is still below it.

How much revenue did Upwork make in 2025?

Upwork reported total revenue of $787.8 million in 2025, a company record and up 2% from $769.3 million in 2024. Revenue has grown faster than volume because the take rate rose, so more of each transaction now stays with Upwork.

Is Upwork shrinking?

The marketplace is flat to slightly down by some measures. Active clients fell from 851,000 at the end of 2023 to 763,000 by June 30, 2026, and quarterly volume dipped to $966.4 million in Q2 2026. But revenue and volume per active client both hit records, so remaining clients are spending more.

Do I still need a contract if I work through Upwork?

The Upwork contract covers payment mechanics and the platform's own terms, but many clients add their own agreement for ownership, confidentiality and non-solicitation. Read any extra agreement closely. Those clauses can limit who you work for next and what you can reuse, which matters more than the fee.
